Led by Athletic Director Chris Del Conte, the Texas Longhorns athletic department expects to win. Winning the Directors' Cup, the award for the best athletic department in college sports, is a huge annual goal for UT. Last year, Texas won the trophy. This season, they're closing in on another win.

Stanford is one of Texas' year in, year out competitors for the award. No athletic department has won more Directors' Cups than the Cardinal. The Palo Alto institution is helped by playing several sports the rest of the country don't, like water polo and men's volleyball.

Since the award's creation in 1993, Stanford has won 26 times, including a streak of 25 in a row from 1994 to 2019. The school that dethroned the Cardinal? Texas. The Longhorns have won four of the last five. Stanford won in 2023. Texas came in second.

The Longhorns success in the award is a huge reason Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte got a big raise and extension. Del Conte doesn't just want the revenue sports to win. He wants every team UT fields to be the best.

Besides the inaugural Directors' Cup won by North Carolina, only Stanford and Texas have won it since. The two are battling again for the prize.

Stanford holds a lead over the Longhorns for this year's trophy, but UT has closed the gap over the past week.

Texas teams went a perfect 13-0 last weekend across six different sports. The Horns won twice in men's tennis, won in women's tennis, won on the road in both men's and women's basketball, the defending national champion softball team dominated a tournament and the baseball team opened the season with a 3-0 sweep.

The men's basketball team hammered Missouri 85-68 on the road. A few days ago they outlasted LSU 88-85. That improves new coach Sean Miller's club to 8-5 in the SEC. UT is now has an 88.3% chance of making the the NCAA Tournament.

The No. 4 ranked Lady Longhorns also got a big SEC road win, edging Tennessee on the road 65-63. The Vols represented one of the final big tests for Texas before March Madness. Texas also dominated Arkansas on the road winning by 31, 92-61.

The Longhorns men's tennis team beat both Texas A&M and TCU at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. And the women's team beat UT-Rio Grand Valley. Texas went on to win the tournament, unofficially considered the indoor tennis national championship. But since it isn't sponsored by the NCAA, it doesn't count towards the Directors' Cup. But the wins do.

Reminder, only NCAA championship play counts towards the Directors’ Cup scoring.

Indoor Tennis is not NCAA sponsored so this result has no impact, though beating 3 top 8 teams will improve @TexasMTN ranking. https://t.co/8u1i1OKX0I

Finally, the Texas Longhorns baseball and softball teams are both unbeaten to start the season.

Last year, Texas had a deep run in the college football playoffs from the football team and national titles in both softball and men's swimming. The key is going deep in the postseason. We'll see if Texas can make it five out of six Director Cup wins.
