If there was ever a day to overreact to news coming out of Houston Texans' training camp, Monday would be the ideal setting.
As veteran wide receiver Tank Dell continues to work his way back to full speed following a gruesome leg injury, Monday might have been the best step forward to being at 100 percent. Dell participated in team drills Monday for the first time since training camp began last month.
It's a massive step forward for the speedster as he had only been working out during individual drills and off to the sides. Last week, he put on pads for the first time, but also worked out away from the team during 7-on-7 drills and team reps.
But yes, Dell did line up for reps during 11-on-11 and even caught a pass from backup Davis Mills. With fans in attendance at the Houston Methodist Training Center, it felt like 2024 all over again and the former 2023 third-round pick looked like his former self.
The Texans have been patient with Dell throughout the entire recovery process. Even while he tried to fight his way through rehab last season, Dell still missed all of last season recovering and didn't work out through offseason drills as a member of the active roster.
The Texans won't push to have Dell back on the field for Week 1 and have been straightforward about his recovery time and potential full return. Dell said last week he's taking it day by day and working toward 100 percent.
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans agreed that the plan is not to rush him back just because it's a matchup against the Buffalo Bills.
"It'll play out how it's supposed to. We're going to take the steps to get where I want to go," Dell said. "How do I envision myself? You know how I come; I'm trying to make plays. I'm trying to be a big factor on the team. I know I am, I know I will be. Just trusting it and going out there and letting loose."
The Texans begin preseason play this Thursday against the Los Angeles Chargers at Reliant Stadium. Houston likely won't play Dell or most starters, given that they will have a joint practice next week against the Las Vegas Raiders.
