The Houston Texans will eventually see Tank Dell make his return to the lineup.
It just didn't happen on Wednesday or Thursday.
Dell, who suffered a severe career-threatening leg injury, did not partake in team drills on either day of practice. The Texans aren't concerned about his limited usage since the plan going into the season was always built around easing him back into a much more substantial role.
“Tank’s worked really hard to put himself in position,” Texans general manager Nick Caserio said. “I’d say he still has some work to do, so you’re not going to see him practice… It’s by design. He’s got some ramp-up work that he’s still going to do.”
Texans coach DeMeco Ryans mentioned that Dell had been working with the team throughout the offseason and has been smart about his recovery time. In fact, he was the one to help set a timeline and specific timetable for when he should be cleared to move on to the next stage of his recovery journey.
“Tank is a smart player, and we know how dynamic Tank was when he got here,” Ryans said. “But he hasn’t played ball in over two years, so it’s important for him when we do our walkthroughs to get those reps.”
Any player placed on the PUP list cannot practice in any capacity, which is why defensive back M.J. Stewart and linebacker E.J. Speed made the cut. Neither player is ready to return to full speed, so missing several weeks isn't that far-fetched an idea.
But Dell can participate in several drills. He was spotted with his helmet on, walking over from the locker rooms and was a part of the stretching routine alongside the other receivers.
"You won't see him practice. You're going to watch practice and wonder where Tank is. Well, it's by design," Caserio said. "So he's got some ramp-up work that he's still going to do, but there are some other things that we can do with him to kind of incorporate him into some team/crossover/walkthrough situations."
Over his two active seasons with the Texans, the former 2023 third-round pick out of Houston has caught 98 passes for 1,376 yards and 10 touchdowns.
