Tempo's Marina Mabrey is finally fulfilling her potential in Toronto originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Marina Mabrey is proving that she is worth every cent of the max contract she received from the expansion Toronto Tempo last month.
The Tempo took a chance on Mabrey, a pending unrestricted free agent, with the sixth pick in last month's expansion draft. Despite her obvious shooting talent, Mabrey's WNBA career has been defined by instability; Mabrey joined her fifth team in eight pro seasons upon agreeing to a max contract to partner Brittany Sykes in the WNBA's first million-dollar backcourt.

Through eight games, the Tempo (4-4) are one of the WNBA's most exciting teams. Toronto ranks third in offensive efficiency, Sykes leads the league in points scored and Mabrey is off to the best start of her career.
Mabrey is averaging 18.8 points per game, making one of the top 10 scorers in the WNBA entering Thursday's action. In Wednesday night's 111-104 win over the Chicago Sky, Mabrey dropped 24 points -- her fourth 20-point game of the season -- and knocked down three more 3-pointers.
Mabrey ranks first in the WNBA in 3-pointers attempted -- and second in makes.

Mabrey surpassed 3,000 career points with her efforts on Wednesday, as the Tempo -- despite ranking 14th out of 15 teams in defensive rating -- improved to .500 on the young season.
Toronto really is living up to its name, and Mabrey -- enjoying a career renaissance at 29 years old -- is a key reason why.
