Tempo's Marina Mabrey making case as $2.4 million star originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Marina Mabrey has been fully unleashed.
After years of trying to prove herself in the WNBA, Mabrey was picked up by the expansion Toronto Tempo and is absolutely hooping in the early going.
Before the season, she got a two-year, $2.4 million contract as part of the new CBA. Some may have thought it was bold. So far, Mabrey is paying it off.
Mabrey is averaging 17.8 points per game in the early going, which would be a career best. Her 1.5 steals per game is also the best mark of her career.
Mabrey is adding 3.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game, as well.

She's shooting 34.6% from beyond the arc and 92.6% at the foul line.
Mabrey and Brittney Sykes have formed a fantastic backcourt together as two players getting the best opportunity of their WNBA career.
For her part, Mabrey recognizes that this is a great chance for her to simply be herself.
"For me, I am ready to kind of unlock everything," Mabrey said, via ESPN. "Maybe in the past years, I haven't put it all together or been in the role to put it all together. When you play for different teams you play a different role everywhere... you don't really get to choose your role so much."
This may have been the perfect landing spot for Mabrey. There's a long season ahead, but if she and Sykes keep playing like this for the Tempo, they're set up to have a very successful first season as a WNBA franchise.
