Okay, I know I'm going to get laughed off the board for this, but what the hell.
Marion's value is sky-high right now. He was an All-Star, made third team All-NBA, and got votes for Defensive Player of the Year. He was one of the few bright spots on the last Olympic team. He is seen, correctly, as an integral part of the success of this year's best regular-season team. And he is a good guy, a good teammate, a good community member, and so forth.
I don't think he should be traded. And I certainly don't think that he should be traded for someone who makes you scratch your head and go, "Huh?" That means no Chandler, no Magloire, no Dalembert, no packages of semi-stars.
And if you are packaging Richardson in the same deal? Then come on. You're talking about a top-20 player plus a very capable, diverse swingma
n on a good contract and still approaching the peak of his career. That's a lot of talent.
If the Suns were to ship those two out as part of the same trade, I would expect someone awesome in return. Someone above the stature of Marion, which means a perennial All-Star, consistently first or second team All-NBA, one of the truly elite players in the league.
I would expect Kevin Garnett.
There will be rumors of Garnett trades this summer. You can bet on it. Whether there will be any substance to them, we probably won't know, but there will be rumors. Sprewell is gone, Cassell is as good as gone, they have no center, and the team is basically in a tailspin. I'm not saying that the Wolves will or should trade Garnett, but I can guarantee that people will discuss it.
The salaries are pretty close. Minnesota would probably want a draft pick and/or Hunter (which might be just as well, since Hunter seems to need Richardson for moral support), and/or Phoenix might have to agree to take on a somewhat bad contract. But those are just details.
Garnett in Phoenix would lead to some immediate issues. First of all, he and Stoudemire would have to make nice, and second of all, Garnett would have to accept being the second option -- although probably the most potent second option in the history of the league. Is Garnett ready to put his ego aside and become a winner? That would be the big question.
But...
You want a defensive presence? You want another player who can create his own shot? You want someone who brings to the table everything Marion does, and more? How can you not love this for the Suns?
It's not a bad deal for Minnesota. Not bad at all. If they decide that Garnett has to go, they'd have to consider it.
