Suns should trade Marion and Q

If the Suns are serious about winning a championship, they must put together a team that can compete against San Antonio. This current Suns team is on the verge of being swept and little improvements in the offseason wont be enough to get it done against the spurs next year. Q has been ok the last few games, but ok want cut it when you're playing the best team in the league. And Marion inablility to create his own offense makes it easy for Bowen to shut him down.

I'd like to see a Marion for Chandler+Pargo and/or Griffin trade although I don't know how the contracts matchup.

Q could be traded to bring in more depth (preferably defensive minded players).

I know I'm gonna get bashed but that's what I think needs to happen if the suns wanna get past the spurs.

I am as angry as the next guy, but come on, we lost a series to San Antonio, let's not demolish the team just yet.

this is ridiculous....remember, this team has only been together for 8 months now. The Spurs have been together for 6-7 years minus a few players here and there.....did we forget that this team is one of the youngest with tons of potential...Amare will be the next superstar and he will command just as much attention as Duncan does...trading Marion and Q is going too far...we need a big guy but there isn't much out there...look at Dampier, what a waste of space and money. Keep the core together and add a few players...I know that Hunter is not the best option but he has potential and he can learn so much more about this game. Also, the Spurs are light years ahead of us in terms of playoff experience. This series and these playoffs will only help this team down the road.

Griffin/Curry or Chandler would not buy us much at all...I would rather put my money on a draft pick or Hunter and keep the core 5 together. Remember, both Hunter and Amare are 10 years younger than Duncan/Shaq. Time is on our side.

What's next? Just hang tight, we weren't supposed to make it this far that's why we signed Nash for 6 years. The problem with NBA GMs is that they don't keep players together for the long haul...we need to keep ours together. The NBA sucks because teams don't have the patience...I would like to see our group stay together like the Celtics of the 80's, the Lakers of the 80's and the Bulls of the 90's. They kept their teams intact and did well, we need to do the same.

This is why all of us are not GMs in the NBA...we would fail miserably with our rationale and our ease of jumping the gun.

Okay, I know I'm going to get laughed off the board for this, but what the hell.

Marion's value is sky-high right now. He was an All-Star, made third team All-NBA, and got votes for Defensive Player of the Year. He was one of the few bright spots on the last Olympic team. He is seen, correctly, as an integral part of the success of this year's best regular-season team. And he is a good guy, a good teammate, a good community member, and so forth.

I don't think he should be traded. And I certainly don't think that he should be traded for someone who makes you scratch your head and go, "Huh?" That means no Chandler, no Magloire, no Dalembert, no packages of semi-stars.

And if you are packaging Richardson in the same deal? Then come on. You're talking about a top-20 player plus a very capable, diverse swingman on a good contract and still approaching the peak of his career. That's a lot of talent.

If the Suns were to ship those two out as part of the same trade, I would expect someone awesome in return. Someone above the stature of Marion, which means a perennial All-Star, consistently first or second team All-NBA, one of the truly elite players in the league.

I would expect Kevin Garnett.

There will be rumors of Garnett trades this summer. You can bet on it. Whether there will be any substance to them, we probably won't know, but there will be rumors. Sprewell is gone, Cassell is as good as gone, they have no center, and the team is basically in a tailspin. I'm not saying that the Wolves will or should trade Garnett, but I can guarantee that people will discuss it.

The salaries are pretty close. Minnesota would probably want a draft pick and/or Hunter (which might be just as well, since Hunter seems to need Richardson for moral support), and/or Phoenix might have to agree to take on a somewhat bad contract. But those are just details.

Garnett in Phoenix would lead to some immediate issues. First of all, he and Stoudemire would have to make nice, and second of all, Garnett would have to accept being the second option -- although probably the most potent second option in the history of the league. Is Garnett ready to put his ego aside and become a winner? That would be the big question.

But...

You want a defensive presence? You want another player who can create his own shot? You want someone who brings to the table everything Marion does, and more? How can you not love this for the Suns?

It's not a bad deal for Minnesota. Not bad at all. If they decide that Garnett has to go, they'd have to consider it.

I didn;t say we should make no changes, I just said we shouldn't demolish the team. Changes that need to be made are these:
1. Add SOME bench.
2. PLAY BLOODY DEFENSE, everyone on that team needs to realize that their balls aren't gonna fall off if they try playing defense.

It's THAT simple.

Elindhom- I agree with eveything you said...good assessment...you're dead on. I wonder if Amare/Garnett would be a good fit...man, it is nice to dream but I don't want to see Marion or Q go.

Age is everything now...and we have got the youth and the potential.

I know I said we should try to be nice, but this is getting a little ridiculous. The Phoenix Suns will not and should not trade Shawn Marion and/or Q this summer. This is a team that won 62 game and made it to the Western Conference finals with very little depth and a key player injured. What they need is more experience, some depth, and some more time during the regular season playing a traditional lineup. I'm not saying they should completely abandoned skilled ball. Just play a traditional lineup more frequently.

You should be laughed off the board for that trade suggestion, Eric. :)

It would be awesome, but it's completely unrealistic.

The big question is would Minnesota consider it? Obviously they are going nowhere with the team they have, and may even be worse than they were this year because since spreewell is a free agent, they won't be getting assets for him leaving, and him leaving still leaves them over the cap. So since they'll likely may miss the playoffs again (remember golden state, lakers, will certainly be playoff contenders next year, a team of garnett and role players isn't much) them considering moving Garnett (with a bad contract like hudson or the huge wally contract) to get young assets, and some future flexibility to build around (with the high picks they'll get tanking the next couple of years) is not totally out the question.

Is marion/q/21 pick a good enough offer, are there better offers out there? How about odom/butler/and the lakers lottery pick, a better offer? I'm not sure. But the wolves moving garnett is not as crazy as it sounds.

Yeah, but you dont rip apart the entire team.

The Suns just need depth, and a bit of defense. You dont trade away 2 of your starters and arguably the best SF in the game because you lost in the WCF.

I LOVE the idea of:

Nash
Jackson
Johnson
Garnett
Amare

That being said, the team would probably implode. Garnett and Amare on the same team? (Not to mention how much Garnett HATES Hunter.) Someone would be killed before the end of next season.

I dont want KG anywhere near the Suns line-up. We have Nash to make plays for us and we have perimeter shooters and we have a tremendous top 3 inside player.

KG is a bit of all those above... he doesnt excel in any of them. So he is better off in a team where those things are lacking.

Anyways, I think a Chandler-type player would be perfect.

But why look somewhere else and trade away our core... when we have our own atheletic big... sitting on the bench.

Thats Hunter...

The guy should be starting, the team next year should be 50/50 with the small ball and a conventional line-up. Obviously some teams (Spurs) are small ball proof since they can play small ball with the best of them. (Duncan, Horry, Barry/Bowen, Ginobili, Parker)

We need to have a conventonal line-up, and we need to get this team to learn to win with a conventional line-up.... Mix that in with our Small Ball... and we have a team that is Piston/Spur/Pacer/Miami beater.

IF we are talking about a Garnett to Phoenx trade i can actually see it working out OK. it would take a few other moves to round out the roster and a boatload of money on the suns ownership part, but it can work.

1.)McCarty does us a favor and excercises is player option, or if was turned into a team option, it gets excercised by us.
2.)The suns then trade: Marion/Q/McCarty/Hunter/#21 for Garnett/Kandi.
3.)We then trade our 2007 first rounder and $2mil to Memphis for their 2005 first rounder #19.
4.)We then trade Barbosa to Toronto for their Philly first rounder #16.
5.)We then trade Voskul to NJ for Ron Mercer.
6.)We sign Marko Jaric to the full MLE. (4 year $23.6mil)
7.)We sign Brevin Knight to the Million Dollar Exemption (3 year $5.5mil).

Draft:
#16 - Charlie Villanueva - backup SF/PF/C. he he's got size and skill, and not much of a project.
#18 - Channing Frye - Arizona native. i see him as a more polished version of Hunter, who can shoot from the outside and hit FREE THROWS.
#57 - Travis Diener - might be a nice backup to the backup at PG. the kid has the drive to be a winner. he can shoot/pass.

New Lineup:
Kandi/Frye
Amare/Villanueva
Garnett/Jimmy J/Mercer
JJ/Jaric/Mercer
Nash/Knight/Diener

Total Payroll with absolutely no relief anytime soon - $63.3mil

Amare and Garnett MUST get along....and absolutely NO INJURIES or we would be F'ed.

Forget Olowokandi. He sucks and could not possibly fit into the Suns' system. If we're talking Garnett pipe dreams, Stoudemire and Garnett are the two bigs.

if we were talking about KG, Hunter would almost certainly have to be included. in return, we ask for Kandi. he may not be much of anything, but he is an expiring contract. he also has experience.

i would definately keep Hunter if possible, but i dont think it would happen.

How ridiculous is the idea to put together a team to beat a certain "team", I can't even describe it. We have a pretty darn good team that is very young. Several of the players were first time in playoffs. They need to learn from this experience and come back again next year. It is very important that we not only keep the chemistry but improve it, and it can only be done by keeping the core together.

What the team needs to focus on in the off season is the shortcomings and address these:

- Consistent defense (major reason of the let dowin in the finals and 0-3 record). And it does not mean that suddenly we are the defense specialist. But we can play reasonable defense and win with this team but they need to have this attitude and mentality and that is what needs work on this off season.

- Consistent hustle and rebounding: our big guys need to hit the boards plain and simple. What is Hunter's rebound average? Amare has lately picked up his rebounding so that is a good sign.

- Bench: we need a good bench. At present, I would say only Jim Jax and Hunter are worth to keep. Rest are garbage and need to be replaced.

There were rumors when the McCarty trade happened that he waived his PO. That was the reason the deal was held up for a while, we were not willing to do it unless he agreed to.

I shrugged it off because I hadn't heard anything official on it, but I think I remember reading in one of the articles about how Jackson gave up salary in his holdout to come here that McCarty actually did waive the option.

We must keep the starting 5 in tact. Find a passing PG to back up Nash, move LB to the 2. Try to find another athletic big. These things CAN be accomplished.

Next year both teams will be a year older and in this case, that helps the Suns (though I doubt Nash can have another year quite like this one). How long can TDs ankles hold up? Will SA have as deep of a bench as they do next year? What will Amare be like after another off season- his D and rebounding will hopefully be improved. Q has a lot to work on, his mid range game, defense and consistency. We have a young team full of potential.

If I wouldve told you before the preseason the Suns would finish 62-20, have the MVP, Coach of the Year, 3 All Stars, a player on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd team NBA, the NBA Executive of the Year, and make it to the WCF, you are telling me that wouldve been a let down? No one expected this. Next year, Im sure the Suns will be better...just need to deepen that bench

Scary thing Eric -- I actually see where you are going with this one. I just don't think that Minny could pull the trigger because while Marion is awesome, he cannot get his own shot (with great effectiveness).

I think that getting KG would take near what Orlando wanted for McGrady.

Something that Minny might do and the Suns would have to look at?

Marion /JJ (resigned starting at 8 million) / #21

for

Hassel /Garnett / #14

That would leave each team with the following depth charts:

Suns
Add a player with the pick

PG:Nash/Barbosa
SG:Q/Hassel
SF: Jackson/McCarty
PF:Amare/Hunter
C:Garnett/Voskuhl/Shirley

Wolves
Add a player with the pick

PG:Cassel/Hudson
SG:Johnson/Wally/Hoiberg
SF: Marion/Ebi
PF:Resign people
C:Kandi

Well Minny has a lot of FAs they would need to decide on to fill it out I guess :p

Anyways - I agree with the general thought process Eric had. If we were to do a major deal including two of our starters, we need to get a top tier player in return. Of course, like I said earlier - I think this team earned another year together.

Ug, no. I hate that starting 5. Amare and KG would clash. They both want/need the ball. I dont want Jackson starting, he's getting too old, I doubt he could stand up to playing 35+ minutes for 82 games in our system. Plus he would be undersized at that position.

Trading JJ and Marion would mean trading the best 2 defenders we have. And our problem this year was no defense! No no no no no. Keep the team together, add some bench. Thats the way.

i really DON'T like that lineup one bit. we are pretty screwed for the future.
Jackson is getting old, and beyond next year, he wont be good fore much more than a bench player.
Q isnt really made to play SG. he doesnt match up well with many other quicker guys.
the bench itself is beyond ugly. McCarty doesnt do much of anything. Hassel would be nice i guess. Voskuhl is a good guy, but not much of a player. Hunter still needs to learn a lot (how to shoot/hang onto the ball when going up for a shot.)

i really would only go for a Marion/Q/#21 for Garnett/Hassell. if needed i would include Hunter, but we NEED to keep JJ at all cost.
