Did anyone get a chance to see Duane Rankin's article about day 1 of the draft? I was never a big fan of his, Gerald is a far better reporter, but this just cements him as being completely clueless. It's paywalled, but he gave us a C for the day -- a B for drafting Maluach and a D for giving up 2 late 1st rounders for a guy that failed the Lakers physical. Of course he doesn't mention that there is a good chance he didn't actually fail any such physical, that it was likely a fake diagnosis by the Lakers to get out of what was a much worse trade than the one we pulled off.

Rankin is an awful analyst. I'm not surprised he is being a contrarian in regards to the draft. Even ESPN has hyped the Suns for their draft day moves.

Rankin has revealed himself as more of a KD fan than objective reporter over the last few years. That's fine for a blogger but it's sad coming from the AZ Republic.

Unfortunately, he has moved down on my reading list, not that he doesn't have a right to his opinions.

Still miss Paul Coro at the Arizona Republic.

Interesting video of Maluach and Fleming doing some training together.

Thank you for posting. A few observations:

1. Khaman is a big boy. He looks enormous next to Fleming.

2. Khaman looks like he’s a very quick study. Picks things up quickly. Fleming maybe a tad slower. But this is admittedly limited film.

3. Fleming is a little less atgletic/explosive than I anticipated.

4. The skill that bigmen possess today is eye popping. Can anyone here imagine mark west doing those dribbling drills?!? lol. Impressed by the young guys.

Based on that it does look like Fleming might be mostly a below the rim guy. Man Khaman is just big. If he is anywhere near the rim it looks like he can put it down.

Haven't watched much on Flemming outside the typical youtube scouting reports, but he certainly looks more explosive in games. Khaman certainly seems the quicker study with footwork though.

I think Maluach is not the normal freshman coming into the NBA. He has skills.

It's amazing that Maluach dwarfs Fleming who is big in his own right at 6 feet 8¼ inches (w/o shoes) with a wingspan of 7 feet 5¼ inches and a standing reach of 9 feet 1.

Fleming has nice handles for 6-9, 7-5. I think he is used to pacing himself in practice and not dunking everything. He can fly. I have seen him.

It is hard to believe Khaman is 18. 7-2 and doing those dribbling drills is amazing, he also just moves to the hoop with some fluidity including the dunk. I like to see a big man dunk it for a high percentage shot but not throw it down so hard he risks injury.

So, what should we call him. How about "Special K"

he's 18. that absolutely makes him the normal freshman coming into the league, IMO.

Also haven't watched much film, so this could be off base but it's possible Khaman looks more comfortable with this is that he's been the pick and roll guy for Duke so has probably had more reps with similar type drills. I'm guessing Fleming has done more wing drills.

There's also the LeBron factor. A lot is coming out how the prior owners basically let LeBron pick the coaches and players that were on the Lakers. Part of why LeBron wants out, is the new owners have made it known he won't have the same pull. They are building the team around Luka. In theory, LeBron could have pulled the plug on the trade.

I think the Suns should get credit for taking him when he dropped. They obviously didn't do that with Haliburton.

I don't think Lebron knew about the trade in advance.

And we still have Dunn. Wonder what he has dunn work on this summer. Hope Ott has a system where Book and Green can be effective. Getting curious for the new season.
Forget Dunn. He's not new any more. I kid! I love the dude! I hope I enjoy these guys as much.
