Feb. 21—DENVER — South Dakota State won its fifth straight game on Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Gymnasium, dispatching the Denver Pioneers 71-55.
The win was the 650th of coach Aaron Johnston's career — all with the Jackrabbits — as SDSU built a big lead that left Denver's late rally well short.
Madison Mathiowetz had 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting to carry the Jacks (22-6, 12-2) on a day they shot 58 percent as a team, while fellow senior Brooklyn Meyer had 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The Jacks led 33-23 at halftime and pushed the advantage as high as 26 early in the fourth quarter.
Hadley Thul had 10 points for the Jacks, who committed an uncharacteristic 22 turnovers, but their defense held the Pios to 30 percent shooting, and the Jacks also held a 39-25 edge on the glass.
Coryn Watts had 26 points for Denver (10-18, 4-11).
With the win and USD's loss to NDSU, the Jacks moved into sole possession of second place. The Bison clinched a share of the conference title and can clinch it outright with a win over SDSU on Wednesday in Fargo.
The Jacks then close out the regular season at home next Saturday against USD.
