May 20—MINNEAPOLIS — Sam Schlecht pitched into the eighth inning and Owen Siegert and Luke Luskey each drove in two runs as 4th-seeded South Dakota State cruised past top-seed and regular season champion Oral Roberts 7-3 in the first game of the Summit League baseball tournament at Siebert Field.

It was the first time in 20 all-time games in Summit baseball tournament history that SDSU has defeated Oral Roberts. It was also the Golden Eagles' first loss in an opening-round game in 25 Summit League tournaments.

Leading 2-1 after a solo homer by Luskey and an RBI single by Keagen Jirschele, the Jacks scored four runs in the sixth to blow open a 6-1 lead, with Siegert's two-run single the key hit. It was 7-1 after Luskey's RBI groundout in the 8th.

That was plenty for Schlecht, who took that six-run lead into the 8th before giving up a two-run homer to league MVP Makani Tanaka to make it 7-3. But Ty Madison came on and retired the final five batters of the game in order to give the Jacks the upset win and earn his second save of the season.

Schlecht (4-3) was charged with three runs on six hits in 7.1 innings, walking none and striking out a career-high eight.

Meanwhile the Jacks got to Summit League pitcher of the year Easton Teel (4-3), who allowed three runs on six hits with four walks in five innings of work.

Sieger was 3-for-5 while Luskey and Nolan Grawe each went 2-for-5 for the Jacks (22-30).

The Jacks will face the winner of Omaha and Northern Colorado on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Golden Eagles (33-23) head to the loser's bracket and will face the loser of UNO and UNC.
