Putting in some extra time with her mother rewarded Brenna Fyffe with some big flies.
Fyffe is a senior for the Kenton Ridge High School softball team. In a four-game stretch over four days, she had three multiple home run games and produced 14 RBI while going 11-for-13 at the plate.
For her efforts, Fyffe was named the Dayton Daily News Athlete of the Week for April 20-26, earning the honor through reader voting at DaytonDailyNews.com.
“I wouldn’t have been able to get this without the team I have and the coaches and my family,” she said. “I have such a good support system and my teammates always cheer me on.”
Fyffe hit two home runs against at Tecumseh and two days later repeated the feat at North Union. She didn’t record an out in the first game of a twin-bill against defending Division I state champion Lebanon, and in the second game against Centerville smacked two more homers.
“I’ve been feeling a lot more relaxed before and after every practice,” she said. “My mom and I have been going and getting extra reps in and we’ll go up with my team and get them in too.”
An Ohio University commit, she said her added confidence at the plate of late has come from not putting as much pressure on herself to live up to her collegiate commitment.
“Once I committed, that’s when I had put pressure on myself to prove for everybody that I was good, and then now I just have kind of calmed down and relaxed to realize that I’m good no matter what,” Fyffe said.
The senior is a three-team all-state pick and first team selection in the Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail division. She also recently became the program’s all-time hits leader.
She said the performance against Centerville displayed her team’s attitude where everyone wants to continue proving their mental toughness.
A catcher from game-to-game, getting to consistently see pitch types from sophomore Ivee Rastatter from behind the plate has also helped her focus on what pitches to swing while at the plate.
“She’s such a good pitcher, and seeing her spin and knowing what she’s throwing and how each pitch has a different spin, just being able to read that while I’m up to bat helps me so much.”
Spread the word to sports fans and parents you know to nominate deserving student athletes.
