Is this the year that France finally wins the World Cup?

That is a question that very few observers of the tournament are asking, namely because it has already happened twice. France quite famously won its first World Cup in 1998 on home soil, then pulled off the feat again in 2018 led by a teenage forward named Kylian Mbappe.

But for Stephen A. Smith, that question is still very much in the air, as he demonstrated during a segment on ESPN's "First Take" on Wednesday, June 17.

Smith was breaking down France's 3-1 win over Senegal on Tuesday, a game in which Mbappe scored a pair of goals.

"For me, it's about Mbappe for France. He scores two goals yesterday," Smith said. "OK, remember, he scored a hat trick in the finals loss to Argentina in 2022. I'm wondering whether or not this is the year for France.

"I'm thinking about France because of Wemby and how he just went home in the NBA Finals. I'm wondering what France is going to do.

"Could this be the year that they finally get it done, and they win the World Cup? Considering Mbappe, and what we saw him do yesterday, and what we know he's capable of doing, because he's done it before."
