The Pittsburgh Steelers are taking a page from the Cleveland Browns, bringing four quarterbacks to training camp this summer.
Unlike the Browns last year and Steelers this year, Pittsburgh has an undisputed starting quarterback in Aaron Rodgers, set to play in his final season in the NFL.
The Steelers will use the preseason to evaluate veteran quarterback Mason Rudolph, second-year hopeful Will Howard, and rookie Drew Allar.
Rudolph and Howard knew they'd be competing for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart this summer, with the possibility one would be cut before the 53-man roster is released. NFL teams typically don't keep four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, and it's extremely unlikely they'd part with Allar, a third-round pick in this year's draft.
Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters where the quarterback depth chart stands this week.
Per Chris Adamski of triblive.com, McCarthy said Rudolph will get reps with the second-team offense, with Howard and Allar splitting reps with the third-team offense.
“Aaron will take the ‘ones,’ Mason will start out with the second group and Will and Drew will take the third-group reps,” McCarthy said. “That’s the way we’ll start.”
Howard was working with the second-team offense during the spring, and it appears he's now on the hot seat before the preseason.
McCarthy noted the Steelers don't have time to waste on developing young quarterbacks at training camp.
“The responsibility to get the starter ready is not only on the quarterback coach and the play caller, but it’s also on the other quarterbacks,” McCarthy said. “And then the starter’s responsibility is to make sure those other three are connected. We’ve got to move the room along.”
Still, McCarthy left open the possibility of keeping all four quarterbacks, saying he's not "philosophically opposed" to keeping all four if they prove to be the best players.
With that being said, the Steelers must weigh cutting Howard or Rudolph to make room for players who can better contribute on game day. After all, there is a chance Pittsburgh could retain Rudolph or Howard via the practice squad, if they were not claimed before.
Given the market for Rudolph this offseason, there's a good chance no one would bite.
