The Pittsburgh Steelers' countdown to kickoff is full steam ahead for the 2026 NFL regular season, with fans needing to wait only 75 more days until the Steel City brand of football returns when the Steelers host the Atlanta Falcons on September 13.
In the spirit of the countdown, we at Steelers Wire will take a look at the history of the No. 75 jersey and analyze which players wore it best.
There isn't a No. 75 on the Steelers roster, and there hasn't been one since the greatest wearer retired following the 1981 season.
Regarded by many as the greatest defender in Steelers history, "Mean" Joe Greene is also the best No. 75 wearer to ever don the Black and Gold.
The cornerstone of the Steel Curtain, AKA the greatest defense in NFL history, Greene was drafted by the Steelers with the fourth overall pick in the first round of the 1969 NFL Draft. Playing in 181 games, including 172 starts, Greene recorded 77.5 unofficial sacks during his 13-year career in Pittsburgh.
Accomplishing accolade after accolade, including being named the 1969 Defensive Rookie of the Year, a 10-time Pro Bowler, a four-time First-Team All-Pro, a two-time Second-Team All-Pro, the 1979 Walter Payton Man of the Year, and a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, Greene was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987.
A major factor in one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history, the 1970s Steelers who won four Super Bowls, Greene is the best No. 75 wearer and deserves every bit of praise and recognition.
