The Pittsburgh Steelers have plenty of roster needs to address in the upcoming free agency period, potentially at running back if one talented player decides to look for greener pastures.

At running back, the Steelers are currently down to Jaylen Warren and Kaleb Johnson, with uncertainty surrounding the future of Steelers 2025 team MVP Kenneth Gainwell, who's set to become a free agent.

If Pittsburgh loses out on Gainwell, New York Jets running back Breece Hall would make an incredible pickup and replacement for the dual-threat playmaker.

Stats:

2022 (7 games): 463 rushing yards, 4 rushing touchdowns, 5.8 yards per carry, 218 receiving yards, 1 receiving touchdown

2023 (17 games): 994 rushing yards, 5 rushing touchdowns, 4.5 yards per carry, 591 receiving yards, 4 receiving touchdowns

2024 (16 games): 876 rushing yards, 5 rushing touchdowns, 4.2 yards per carry, 483 receiving yards, 3 receiving touchdowns

2025 (16 games): 1,065 rushing yards, 4 rushing touchdowns, 4.4 yards per carry, 350 receiving yards, 1 receiving touchdown

Fit with Steelers offense

With Gainwell currently slated to hit free agency, Hall presents the Steelers with another pass-catching running back who could form a solid one-two punch with Warren.

Arguably the most underrated running back currently in the league, Hall has produced three consecutive seasons with at least 1,300 yards from scrimmage, including 27 career touchdowns over the past four seasons.

As McCarthy scrambles to rewrite the narrative surrounding the once-sluggish offense in Pittsburgh, Hall presents the new-look unit with an explosive playmaker out of the backfield — one who can take any rush or reception for six points at any given time.

Contract prediction

The Steelers may have no choice but to pay Hall some top running back money to convince him to join the Black and Gold, potentially with a two-year, $21 million per year contract.
