The Pittsburgh Steelers' countdown to kickoff is full steam ahead for the 2026 NFL regular season, with fans needing to wait only 49 more days until the Steel City brand of football returns when the Steelers host the Atlanta Falcons on September 13.

In the spirit of the countdown, we at Steelers Wire will take a look at the history of the No. 49 jersey and analyze which player wore it best.

Steelers current No. 49: S Sebastian Castro

Castro, who signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent following the 2025 NFL Draft, is the current No. 49 wearer on Pittsburgh's roster.

Last 5 Steelers to wear No. 49

  • Sebastian Castro, 2025-present
  • Jon Rhattigan, 2025
  • Jeremiah Moon, 2024
  • Tariq Carpenter, 2023
  • Cassius Marsh, 2020

Best No. 49 in Steelers history: DB Dwayne Woodruff

The countdown to kickoff brings us to one of the most underrated defensive backs in franchise history: Dwayne Woodruff.

Woodruff, drafted by Pittsburgh with the 161st overall pick in the sixth round of the 1979 NFL Draft, went on to have a productive career with the Steelers. Appearing in 157 games for Pittsburgh, including 105 starts, Woodruff recorded 37 career interceptions — which rank fifth on the Steelers’ all-time list.

A one-time Super Bowl champion, Woodruff’s overall level of play and AFC-leading five interceptions earned him team MVP honors in 1982. One of the most underrated defensive backs in franchise history, there is no greater wearer of No. 49 than Woodruff.
