The Pittsburgh Steelers' countdown to kickoff is full steam ahead for the 2026 NFL regular season, with fans needing to wait only 51 more days until the Steel City brand of football returns when the Steelers host the Atlanta Falcons on September 13.
In the spirit of the countdown, we at Steelers Wire will take a look at the history of the No. 51 jersey and analyze which player wore it best.
Herbig, who signed a massive $100 million contract with Pittsburgh this offseason, is the current No. 51 wearer on the Steelers' roster.
Another day, another historic countdown to kickoff brings us to the greatest No. 51 wearer in franchise history: linebacker James Farrior.
Farrior, selected by the Jets with the 8th overall pick in the first round of the 1997 NFL Draft, would sign with Pittsburgh in 2002 after five seasons in New York. Farrior would play 10 seasons with the Steelers from 2002 to 2011, producing 1,085 combined tackles, 82 tackles for loss, 30 sacks, and 12 forced fumbles in 154 games.
During Farrior's 10-year stint with the Steelers, he won two Super Bowls, as well as earning First-Team All-Pro recognition, Second-Team All-Pro recognition, and receiving two Pro Bowl honors. For his excellence, Farrior was later inducted into the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor, forever etching his place as an all-time great Steeler and the best to ever wear No. 51.
