Southern Miss baseball assistant coach Travis Creel is leaving the program to take over as the coach at Jacksonville State.
Creel was hired by the Gamecocks on June 14, the school announced.
Creel is replacing Steve Bieser, who became the coach at Grand Canyon on June 2. In 2026, the Gamecocks went 48-15 before being eliminated in the final game of the Hattiesburg Regional.
Creel joined former Southern Miss coach Scott Berry's coaching staff as the hitting coach in 2020, and maintained that role under coach Christian Ostrander, who took over for Berry in 2023. Creel also coached defense and helped with the program's recruiting efforts.
The Golden Eagles' offense was productive every season under Creel. In the seven years that Creel coached the offense, Southern Miss made seven NCAA Tournament appearances and advanced to two super regionals.
Southern Miss' team batting average increased every season outside of 2026 under Creel. The Golden Eagles hit .287 as a team. They also hit 86 home runs and finished with an OPS of .854.
Creel played for Southern Miss from 2009-2013. He was a two-time captain and set a program-record with six hits in a single game.
Before returning to Southern Miss, Creel coached for Meridian Community College, Jones County Junior College and Louisiana Tech. He helped coach Jones County Junior College to a NJCAA Division II national championship in 2016.
