COLUMBIA — South Carolina football and North Carolina canceled its home-and-home series and as a result, South Carolina agreed to pay UNC $1 million, according to a letter obtained by The Greenville News via an open-records request.
The letter was sent by South Carolina athletic director Jeremiah Donati to UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham on April 16, and signed by Cunningham on April 29. South Carolina agreed to pay the amount by Aug. 1, 2026.
"Please allow this letter to serve as formal notice that the University of South Carolina is exercising its right to cancel the scheduled 2028 and 2029 home-and-home football contests between the University of South Carolina and the University of North Carolina," it read.
Both the SEC and ACC are moving to a nine-game conference schedule in 2026, which limits the number of non-conference opponents to three per season.
The original game contract from 2020 stated that if the "canceling team's conference mandates an addition conference game be added to the schedule" the cost would reduce from $1.5 to $1 million. Had the game been canceled for the same reason, but more than three years before it was played, South Carolina would only owe UNC $500,000.
On May 22, South Carolina announced that "they have mutually agreed to cancel their home-and-home football series for the 2028 and 2029 seasons."
The Tar Heels were scheduled to play at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia on Sept. 2, 2028. The following season, the Gamecocks would have traveled to Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Sept. 1, 2029.
South Carolina had previously canceled another ACC series with Miami that was slated for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
In addition to nine conference games, every SEC team is required to schedule at least one high-quality non-conference game from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 or Notre Dame each season. Clemson and South Carolina's annual matchup takes care of that requirement for the Gamecocks.
