COLUMBIA, S.C. (May 22, 2026) — The University of South Carolina and the University of North Carolina football programs announced that they have mutually agreed to cancel their home-and-home football series for the 2028 and 2029 seasons. In a related move, South Carolina has added Bowling Green State University to its 2028 schedule.

The Tar Heels were scheduled to play at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, S.C., on Sept. 2, 2028, with the Gamecocks making the return trip to Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill on Sept. 1, 2029.

Both the SEC and ACC are moving to nine-game conference schedules in 2026.

The Tar Heels lead the all-time series between the two bordering flagship state universities by a 35-20-4 margin, but the Gamecocks have won seven of the last 10 meetings, dating back to 1988. The teams last met in Charlotte to open the 2023 season.

Bowling Green and South Carolina will open the 2028 slate at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia on a date to be determined. This will mark the first time that the Falcons, out of the Mid-American Conference, and Gamecocks will meet on the gridiron.
