South Carolina football and North Carolina have mutually agreed to cancel the home-and-home series scheduled for the 2028 and 2029 seasons, the program announced on May. 22.

The Tar Heels were scheduled to play at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia on Sept. 2, 2028. The following season, the Gamecocks would have traveled to Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Sept. 1, 2029.

UNC leads the all-time series vs. South Carolina 35-20-4, but the Gamecocks have won seven of the last 10 meetings, dating back to 1988. The teams last met in Charlotte, North Carolina, to open the 2023 season with UNC winning 31-17 at Bank of America Stadium.

Both the SEC and ACC are moving to a nine-game conference schedule in 2026, which limits the number of nonconference opponents per season to three.

Last October, South Carolina and Miami mutually agreed to cancel their home-and-home series scheduled for the 2026 and 2027 football seasons, too.

As part of the new schedule model, every SEC team will be required to schedule at least one high-quality non-conference game from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 or Notre Dame each season.

In a corresponding move, South Carolina added Bowling Green, a Group of Six program, to its 2028 schedule to open the season at Williams-Brice Stadium. A date will be announced later, and it will be the first matchup ever between those programs.

South Carolina's nonconference opponents in 2028 will be Bowling Green, Wofford (an in-state FCS school) and rival Clemson.

In 2029, the Gamecocks are scheduled to face Appalachian State (Group of Six program) and Clemson. South Carolina will need to add one more game to its schedule to meet the 12-game limit, likely an FCS program.

South Carolina's SEC schedule will feature Kentucky, Georgia and Florida for the next four years. The Gamecocks' remaining six conference opponents will rotate among the remaining conference schools.
