PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers brought in veteran Cam Payne on a deal for the rest of the season over the All-Star break to lead the second unit. The Sixers needed somebody who was going to be able to give Tyrese Maxey a break and find some cohesion for that second unit.

In three games, Payne is averaging 3.0 assists of the bench and the second unit has found that cohesion. The presence of Payne has coincided with Quentin Grimes finding a rhythm again as he has scored in double-figures in all three games and Philadelphia is hoping that will continue as time moves forward.

Jabari Walker, a high-energy guy himself, gave his thoughts on the Payne addition for the bench unit.

"I’ve actually always liked his game," Walker said. "Just the energy he brings. Offensively, defensively, he’s a guy that talks. You can hear him compliment everybody, so he just fits right in with what we already have. I can tell he’s a good person, and he’s gonna be a good leader for us and a good point guard."

For context, Walker said all of this the morning of Feb. 19 before the team's return from the All-Star break, but the point remains true. Payne is a player who can run things, set the table, handle the ball, make sure guys get to their spots, and he can knock down a 3-ball as well. That makes a difference for a bench unit.

"I feel more direction," Walker added. "Even with him knowing less of the plays, he already is telling guys where to go. You feel comfortable when he has the ball, and it makes you wanna get to your spots faster."

Payne will play a role for this Sixers team going forward as they look to prepare for what they hope will be a deep playoff run.
