PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers welcomed Cam Payne back to the lineup in Thursday's 117-107 loss to the Atlanta Hawks and he helped in a number of ways. He didn't score in his return as he missed all three of his shot attempts, but he was able to dish out five assists and get the offense set in his 10 minutes on the floor.

That right there is just as important as him eventually getting going with his shot. The Sixers need somebody who can handle the ball and give Tyrese Maxey some legitimate rest time. Payne was also able to form a nice tandem with Quentin Grimes in the backcourt for the bench unit as he handled the ball and set Grimes up nicely whenever the time called for it.

After the contest on Thursday, Payne gave his thoughts on being able to get on the floor with some of the new guys.

"Q can score," Payne said after the loss. "I like Trendon Watford a lot, too. VJ (Edgecombe), like, I played with him some today. It was cool, man. I'm starting to learn the guys already. I got a few assists out there. So, I mean, I'm figuring them out."

The Sixers will eventually need Payne to step up and knock down shots--he knows that--but as long as he continues to get the plays down that coach Nick Nurse has implemented, then they will be fine in the long run. The now 11-year veteran continues to find ways to make an impact and he did so on Thursday with his ability to just run an offense and get everybody in the right place.

"Get the ball in the goal," Payne said of what comes next. "That's probably the main thing, and honestly, get used to the plays. Get used to the plays. Coach switched a little things up from the times I was there. So, just gotta get used to the plays."

As the Sixers move forward, Payne will be looking to give them a big lift off the bench and help give Maxey a rest. He will eventually put the ball in the basket as well.
