Shohei Ohtani will no longer make his scheduled start against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday. The Los Angeles Dodgers two-way superstar reported to the team’s training staff that his knee irritation was not progressing as he expected.
Ahead of the Dodgers’ doubleheader against the New York Yankees on Sunday, manager Dave Roberts told reporters that Ohtani will not be pitching indefinitely. However, he expects Ohtani to be back on the mound at some point this season.
“Kind of where we’re at, right now, how we’re proceeding, I would say that it’s going to be some time,” Roberts said, per ESPN. “And I say that it’s not going to be a day-to-day thing.”

Ohtani last pitched on July 3 against the San Diego Padres. He had a lubricant injected into his irritated knee on July 12 and skipped the All-Star Game in Philadelphia.
“I just think for us, it’s more like what we’ve done many times over, erring on the side of caution,” Roberts said, per ESPN.
As a result of scratching Ohtani, Emmett Sheehan’s scheduled start will be pushed back to Monday. The Dodgers are expected to throw a bullpen game in the second game of the doubleheader against the Yankees on Sunday.
Roberts said the Dodgers plan to continue using Ohtani as a designated hitter. He was included in the starting lineup for the first game of the doubleheader on Sunday.
“He did this pitching,” Roberts said, per ESPN. “When he does swing the bat, it’s the back knee versus the land knee where you’re kind of driving off of it to create torque when you pitch. So there is no feeling of any sensation [when he hits] or any reason why we feel like we’ve got to stop hitting.”

So far this season, Ohtani has slashed .288/.399/.541 with a .940 OPS and 22 home runs in 94 games.
