Shohei Ohtani's left knee issues and concerns over his viability as a pitcher will extend into the second half, as Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters Sunday, July 19 that Ohtani will not make his next scheduled start and will be absent from the rotation indefinitely.
Ohtani received treatment on the knee during the All-Star break, including a lubricant injection, and missed the annual midsummer game. He was penciled in to rejoin the Dodgers rotation Wednesday against the Philadelphia Phillies, but Roberts said Sunday he will not pitch.
Ohtani's last start as a pitcher came July 3 against the San Diego Padres, when he pitched six innings and gave up three runs. The Dodgers have been curtailing his two-way workload this season, often keeping his bat out of the lineup on days he pitches, and giving him seven to 10 days between starts on the mound.
That's produced his finest season with the Dodgers on the mound, with a 1.79 ERA in 14 starts. He has not thrown enough innings – 85 ⅔ – to qualify for the ERA title.
The Dodgers' starting pitching health remains elusive. Ohtani's setback comes just as as lefty Blake Snell begins a rehab assignment this week. Right-hander Tyler Glasnow has thrown a bullpen session but likely will be out another month as he builds back up from a back injury that's kept him out of the rotation since May 6.
