WICHITA — Shawnee Heights baseball’s dream season ended in the Class 5A State Championship on Saturday, May 30.
The Thunderbirds lost 4-0 to St. Thomas Aquinas, which won its third consecutive championship.
“It just wasn’t our day,” Shawnee Heights head coach Jason Brown said. “We hit some balls hard, we couldn’t find holes and they did. It's the way baseball works sometimes.”
According to Brown, the team’s character has been unquestioned. Throughout the season, the team has fought through adversity and overcome. Whether it was on the field or off the field, Shawnee Heights found a way.

This week, weather delays were the main focus. First pitch time changed, while games also moved days. Shawnee Heights rolled with the punches and made the most of the week.
“They have gotten better as baseball players, but it’s their character.” Brown said. “We got in here on Thursday and we were ready to go. Then I had to tell them that they were cancelling it. We went to the mall for a while and had a blast. It doesn't matter what happens, weather, different formats, they were ready to go every time that they stepped on the field."
The Thunderbirds finished the title game with just two hits. St. Thomas Aquinas’ Lincoln Boyle was fantastic. The Arkansas baseball commit allowed one hit and struck out seven batters. Finding key hits and scoring opportunities were rare for Shawnee Heights.
But, the Thunderbirds defense and pitching kept them in the game. Cambren Floberg earned the start and threw five innings striking our four batters. He allowed two earned runs and eight hits in the loss.
“Flo was good, Flo was really good on the mound today," Brown said. "Our defense, like always, was solid.”
In just his second season coaching, Brown has brought the team a state runner-up finish. It's first state title game appearance since 2016. It's also the program's eighth state championship appearance in program history, too.
“Win or lose, this is a special class,” Brown said. "It's been a long time since Shawnee Heights had been in this game and I'm so proud of them.”
