Shawnee Heights baseball was the only Shawnee County team to play its regional championship on Wednesday, May 20. The Thunderbirds earned a narrow victory to hoist the regional title, sending them to next week's Class 5A State Tournament.
The Thunderbirds defeated fellow United Kansas Conference rival Lansing 3-2.
Shawnee Heights opened the game with two runs in the first inning. Gabe Escobar started things with a double to right field. Cayden Lindsay moved Escobar to third base off of a single. On the following at-bat, Escobar and Lindsay both scored via an error to give Shawnee Heights a 2-0 lead.

Shawnee Heights would hold the lead into the fourth inning. Lansing cut Shawnee Heights’ lead in half via a sacrifice fly. Shawnee Heights added a run in the fifth inning. Trone Purvis laid down a bunt and Camden Olson scored via an error. Lansing added a run in the sixth inning, but it wouldn't be enough to upend the Thunderbirds.
Shawnee Heights finished with just two hits in the game, which were the two pokes from Escobar and Lindsay in the opening frame.
Brady Cooper pitched 5.2 innings. He allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out five batters. Escobar came into relief and pitched 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and two strikeouts.
With zero outs, Lansing had two runners aboard in the seventh inning. Escobar closed the door with a grounder and fly out, finishing the game off with a five-pitch strikeout.
This is Shawnee Heights' third consecutive regional title. The Thunderbirds have lost in the first round of the Class 5A State Tournament in the previous two years.
Shawnee Heights defeated Highland Park 12-0 in the first round of regionals earlier in the day, too.
