Shams: Suns trade for Miles Bridges

I haven't looked at all the calculations but I know the Suns value assets.

It's likely there will be trades to recoup assets if the youngsters improve.

I don’t think we value assets at all, we are a heavily leveraged team that continues to borrow against its future.

We are certainly leveraging assets and spending to the limits. It could work or blow up spectacularly.

I know one thing, our penny-pinching owners of years past, who tanked to acquire picks resulted in zero championships.

I like what they are doing. We have a good coach, size, chemistry, quality starters and reserves at every position. When was the last time we could say that?

Coach Ott to give the youngsters consistent if not significant minutes if the FO really believes in these guys they moved up to secure. Let's do that before they are packaged off in a trade for an aging star.

They seem more interested in spending assets than using them. Even when we have picks we trade them to move up. See Koa and Fleming. We've spent picks dumping Nurkic, acquiring Richards, acquiring Bridges, and trading Royce & Grayson. We'll continue to get future 1s and 2s each year as they're unlocked 7 years out also.

The Suns, under Brian Gregory, clearly view draft picks as currency, a means to an end to acquire the specific physical players they want. They value players under their control far more than future paper assets.

They traded for Miles Bridges, extended Dillon Brooks (3 years, $73M) just yesterday, kept Mark Williams, re-signed Jordan Goodwin, and retained Collin Gillespie.

The Jusuf Nurkic trade was a James Jones era move, not Gregory’s.

The Nick Richards trade was primarily a cost-cutting maneuver to escape the luxury tax.

I predict most of us will become huge Maluach fans this year. He's always had a ridiculously high ceiling but if Summer League was any indication, he's raised his floor considerably too.

Draft pick ARE currency to get players, either through the pick itself, in trade for players, or in order to clear cap space to get players.

That Barttlestein interview on Arizonasports website was interseting surrounding the 2030 pick. Barttlestein was saying the pick wasn't viewed as valuable on the NBA market as what the fans thought.

Even though he didn't go into it, one things the fans miss, is the team taking on more money in the deal generally gets more draft compensation as a rule. It evens out the trade.

Another factor is fans are saying the UNPROTECTED part of the 2030 pick should only be for top players, like a Luka, Leonard, etc. Not someone on the level of Bridges. My thinking is, who were we going to get on that level with the 2030 pick? We would have had to move half our roster for a guy worthy of the 2030 unprotected pick if that was the case. Would I have liked to see top 5 protection? Sure. I also look at it as the stock market, we got two lower picks back closer to helping us now instead of holding onto a future value pick. On the other side of the point, it would suck to pass on two picks now, and wait for that pick in the future and have it be a late round first round pick anyway. It's obviously a risk, but also knowing the Suns luck on draft picks and the lottery, maybe as not a risky pick as we think.

They could've kept all those guys without the trade, we extended them all (and signed Kennard) before the trade went through.
