PHILADELPHIA — This has been a transformational training camp for Saquon Barkley. But he isn’t the only former Penn State player making waves at Eagles camp.
Former Penn State cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields is turning heads and pushing for an unlikely roster spot at the Jefferson Health Training Complex in South Philadelphia.
“He’s done a good job of competing,” defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Tuesday morning. “He’s been around for a while, so he knows the deal. He’s out here with a purpose.”
About an hour after Fangio’s praise, though, it looked like Castro-Fields’ camp hit a roadblock.
During Tuesday’s practice, Castro-Fields suffered an injury and went to the medical tent. He later emerged and returned to practice. That will be something to monitor as the Eagles approach Saturday’s preseason opener vs. the Ravens.
Even completely healthy, Castro-Fields faces an uphill climb to make the 53-man roster.
The Eagles will likely only keep five or six corners. Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean and Riq Woolen are locks. Jonathan Jones and 2025 fifth-rounder Mac McWilliams have played well. Kelee Ringo offers elite special teams value. Jakorian Bennett is in the mix, too.
But Castro-Fields, approaching his third season as a member of the Eagles, is doing all he can to make an impression on Fangio and the rest of the defensive staff.
Last week, the former Nittany Lion stood out during 11-on-11 team drills, picking off rookie Cole Payton and breaking up a pass intended for second-round tight end Eli Stowers.
On Monday, Castro-Fields’ positive start to camp earned him second-team reps over Ringo with Jones nursing a shoulder injury.
Perhaps, if he’s healthy enough to play, Castro-Fields can parlay his success on the practice field into a standout performance vs. the Ravens.

Castro-Fields, a Maryland native, is slated to suit up close to home in Baltimore. The former Riverdale Baptist High School star signed with Penn State in 2017 and played 52 games for the Nittany Lions. He made 30 starts and was named All-Big Ten his senior season.
Castro-Fields, after lighting up the NFL Combine with a 4.38-second 40-yard dash, was selected by the 49ers in the sixth round of the 2022 draft. He signed with the Commanders after being cut by San Francisco and played 10 games for Washington in two seasons.
In 2024, Castro-Fields was picked up briefly by the Panthers before joining the Eagles’ practice squad, where he has been for most of the last two years.
Castro-Fields has never appeared in a regular-season or playoff game for Philadelphia. Maybe, if he continues his upward trend, that changes in 2026.
