PHILADELPHIA — The Eagles have placed a roster hopeful on injured reserve.
Eagles running back Elijah Mitchell has landed on the IR, the team announced on Monday.
In a corresponding move, the Eagles signed Ja’Quinden Jackson to replace Mitchell.
Jackson, who rushed for 1,587 yards at Utah and Arkansas in 2023 and 2024, spent last season on the Jaguars’ practice squad. Jacksonville released him in May.
The Eagles worked out Jackson, defensive tackle David Blay and edge rusher Tarron Jackson on Sunday and signed all three on Monday.
It is a tough blow, though, for Mitchell, who was eyeing a roster spot. Saquon Barkley and Tank Bigsby are locks. But the RB3 job was within Mitchell’s reach, competing with Will Shipley and Dameon Pierce in training camp.
Mitchell, who was signed in June, offered some upside. He had experience in a system similar to what new Eagles OC Sean Mannion is installing. As a rookie in 2021, he led the San Francisco 49ers with 963 rushing yards.
But Mitchell won’t be able to make good on that potential for the rest of camp. After leaving Saturday’s practice early with an injury, Mitchell’s roster push is now formally over.
