PHILADELPHIA —Eagles star edge rusher Jonathan Greenard isn’t expected to return from injury any time soon.

Greenard, who is out with a pectoral strain, “won’t be back for another couple weeks, at least,” defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said on Tuesday morning.

Greenard was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list at the start of camp. The major trade acquisition suffered a pec strain while lifting ahead of camp.

General manager Howie Roseman said on the first day of camp that Greenard did not sustain a long-term injury.

“One of the things that we know about Greenard is he’s going to be ready to play,“ Roseman said. ”Training camp’s so important, practice is so important. But when you have a guy like that who prepares the way he does, who has the experience in the NFL the way he does, you know he’s going to be ready to play when we start the season. ... This is nothing we’re concerned about.”

Still, it would be a positive if Greenard got some practice reps in before the regular season kicks off on Sept. 13.

Greenard, despite being a 29-year-old veteran and a 2024 Pro Bowler, is learning a new system under Fangio — an old school coach who places a lot of emphasis on practice.

The Eagles made quite an investment in Greenard. Roseman sent two third-round picks to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for Greenard.

The Eagles also signed Greenard to a four-year, $100 million contract extension, with $50 million guaranteed.

Without Greenard, Jalyx Hunt has outplayed Nolan Smith and emerged as a clear starter. A.J. Epenesa and Arnold Ebiketie have also had positive camps, taking advantage of the reps afforded to them in Greenard’s absence.

But the Eagles (and Fangio, specifically) would love to have Greenard back as soon as possible.

“The running, the change of direction, the fatigue. He’s going to lose that,” Fangio said. “... That’s going to be something we’ll have to be cognizant of when he comes back.”
