St. Paul got back above the .500 mark with a dominant 8-1 victory at Louisville Thursday night, as third baseman Royce Lewis smacked his seventh homer of his time with the Saints.
Lewis’ seventh round tripper came in his first at-bat, with a two-run shot to left center field to also plate shortstop Kaelen Culpepper to post the visitors to a 2-0 lead in the top of the opening inning.
However, it was not St. Paul’s biggest blast of the game. That honor went to catcher Noah Cardenas, who smacked a second-inning grand slam that plated second baseman Ben Ross, first baseman Aaron Sabato and outfielder Kyler Fedko as the Saints held a sudden 6-0 lead on the Bats that they did not relinquish.
St. Paul added solo tallies in the next two frames with a Ross force out that plated outfielder Matt Wallner in the third and a Fedko sacrifice fly that drove home outfielder Hendry Mendez in the fourth that brought an end to the Saints’ scoring exploits in the contest.
Due to a sterling night by St. Paul’s pitching staff, the Saints were in cruise control for most of the contest. Starter Ryan Gallagher threw five shutout innings while striking out five and allowing four hits. Andrew Brash relieved Gallagher in the sixth and worked hits way around four walks to add on two shutout frames before giving way to C.J. Culpepper.
Culpepper allowed four hits in his two innings of work, including a ninth-inning homer to spoil the shutout, while striking out four to secure the lopsided victory.
St. Paul improved to 27-26 on the season with the victory, the Saints have won two of three thus far in Louisville. The two teams take the field again at 6:15 p.m. Friday.
