An early 5-1 lead did not lead to victory for St. Paul, as Louisville rallied in the middle innings to claim an 11-7 win over the visiting Saints.
After the Bats took an initial 1-0 edge in the second inning, the Saints bounced back with three runs in the third and two more in the fourth. Catcher Ricardo Olivar drove in a pair of runs during the offensive uprising with an RBI double and then a solo home run as part of a 2 for 4 night at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored.
However, Olivar’s exploits could not save the Saints. Louisville struck back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to knot the score at 5-all.
The two teams traded a run apiece in both the fifth and sixth frames before the Bats struck for four more in the seventh to seize control of the game, and eventually the victory. St. Paul came up empty in its final three turns in the batter’s box before the curtain came down on a four-run loss.
Three Saints hit homers in the matchup, with shortstop Kaelen Culpepper and centerfielder Ben Ross going deep for solo shots in the fifth and sixth, respectively. It was the lone hit of the game for both batters. Third baseman Royce Lewis did not add to his seven total homers since joining St. Paul, going 1 for 4 with an RBI double.
Pitcher Ty Langenberg, the second Saints pitcher out of the bullpen in relief of starter Aaron Rozek, took the loss after allowing five earned runs on six hits in two innings of work. Rozek allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.
The two teams face each other in the penultimate game of their week-long series at 6:15 p.m. Saturday. John Klein (1-1, 6.10 ERA) is scheduled to start for St. Paul. Louisville has not announced a starter.
