Buoyed by a four-run seventh inning, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies forced a winner-take-all Game 3 in the Eastern League championship series with a 5-4 victory over the Erie SeaWolves on Sept. 23.
Game 3 of the best-of-three series is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24 at UPMC Park in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Erie won Game 1, 14-5, on Sept. 21 at Mirabito Stadium in Binghamton.
The Rumble Ponies entered the seventh inning of Tuesday's contest trailing 2-1. Jacob Reimer capped a four-run inning with a two-run, two out single to give Binghamton a 5-2 lead.
Wyatt Young's bases-loaded walk earlier in the seventh tied the score 2-2. A.J. Ewing followed with an RBI single to give Binghamton a 3-2 advantage.
Erie scored twice in the bottom of the seventh off Ryan Lambert to get within one. Lambert induced a double play off the bat of Thayron Liranzo to end the inning.
Ben Simon pitched perfect eighth and ninth innings to preserve the victory.
Felipe De La Cruz went four innings of relief for Binghamton and earned the win. He allowed one run on two hits, striking out three. The lone Erie run off him came on a homer from Liranzo in the sixth inning that broke a 1-1 tie.
Binghamton's Chris Suero went 2-for-3 with a run. Reimer was 2-for-4 and Young went 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk.
Reimer put Binghamton up 1-0 in the third with an RBI double.
Erie is seeking its third consecutive title in the Double-A Eastern League, a streak that started in 2023 with a sweep of the Rumble Ponies.
Binghamton is chasing its first championship since a 3-0 sweep of the Richmond Flying Squirrels in 2014. The Rumble Ponies also won titles in 1992 and 1994.
The Rumble Ponies are the Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets. Erie is affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.
