The City of Round Rock lit the town water tank maroon in honor of the state champion Dragons, which beat Keller 3-1 in Saturday's championship game. The team rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to score three straight times.
Trailing 1-0, Grace El-Deir — Round Rock's all-time leader in single-season goals — took a pass from Aidan Hernandez and laced the tying goal midway through the first half. Hernandez scored the go-ahead penalty kick near the end of the half to give the Dragons a 2-1 edge at the break. Hernandez added her second goal with a little more than 10 minutes left for the final score.
Dragons goalkeeper Lucy Grazecki had a solid day patrolling the back line as the Dragons' young defense clamped down after Keller's early goal.
Hernandez, El-Deir, Phia Hull and Audrey Redus were selected to all-state tournament team. Hernandez was named championship match MVP.
Wimberley rules in 4A DII
Wimberley blanked Sunnyvale 3-0 to win the Class 4A DII championship as sisters Emma and Abby Durkin both scored along with Samantha Santana. The Texans dominated the contest with a 13-7 advantage in shots on goal and a clear midfield ball dominance.
The Durkins, Lilli Sandoval and Jordin Donaldson were Wimberley all-state tournament selections. Emma Durkin was named championship match MVP.
"It was a dream come true," Texans coach Eric Nichols said.
