Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from the Arnold Palmer Invitational ahead of Saturday's third round with a back injury, the PGA Tour announced.

According to Todd Lewis of The Golf Channel, McIlroy "tweaked something" while in the gym before he headed to his warmup. Lewis added that the No. 2 ranked player in the world felt he could finish the tournament, but withdrew as a precaution ahead of defending his titles at the Players Championship next week and the Masters next month.

McIlroy, the 2018 API champion, was set to tee off at 12:55 p.m. ET with Ryan Fox. He opened the tournament shooting an even-par 72 on Thursday before moving up the leaderboard on Friday with a minus-4.


This is only the second time in McIlroy's PGA Tour career that he was forced to withdraw from an event. The last time it happened was 2013 during what was then known as the Honda Classic when he said he was dealing with a sore wisdom tooth.
