Rory McIlroy had played well through two rounds of the Arnold Palmer Invitational this week.

The PGA Tour superstar won't play two more rounds of golf, though. He has withdrawn from the tournament.

McIlroy shot an even-par 72 in the first round on the tough course on Thursday.

On Friday, he posted a 4-under 68 by making four birdies and five pars on the back-nine.

That would've been great momentum heading into the weekend if he hadn't withdrawn.

Why did Rory McIlroy withdraw from the Arnold Palmer Invitational?

McIlroy withdrew due to injury.

The Golf Channel's Todd Lewis reported Saturday that McIlroy injured his back while warming up for the third round, causing him to withdraw.

Daniel Berger is running away from the tournament at 13-under before starting the weekend, a five-shot lead, but all the 4-under players are in the top-10, so McIlroy was looking at a potentially strong finish.

Instead, the question becomes how long Rory might be out.

The Players Championship is next weekend, one of the biggest events on tour. McIlroy would clearly want to play in that if he can.

The golf world will have to wait and see just how bad this back tweak is.
