Wolfley and Urban have nailed the top pick the last couple of years. Very interesting analysis by Wolfley regarding Hughes. Sorry, don't have time to post the link. It's on the Cards website.

Interestingly Football Outsiders developed a tool to project edge rushers in the NFL. It's based on four factors: vertical leap, short shuttle, sack production in college, and playing time in college. Hughes was the clear head of this years de/ 3-4 olb class according to the metric.

Cant really argue with Wolf's logic and if he is the BPA at that spot i can see it happen. Think its a bit far fetched to even utter Lamar Woodley comparisons but Hughes does have elite potential at the OLB spot. Brandon Graham reminds me a lot more of Woodley but he'll be long gone before the #26 spot.

I'm with ya on that comparison. I luv what Hughes has to offer but if Graham somehow slipped to #26, us a fans should be estatic!!!

One thing: Wolf, at one point, seems to be addressing a replacement for B-Train in old Predator role, off the weakside, and later making a reference to Woodley who attacks from the strongside.

Hughes rushes effectively from the strongside (as does Woodley), so that reference seems to make more sense given that we have the potential of Cody Brown on the weakside.

Sadly, I think Hughes is long gone by then. If Miami doesn't move I think they'll take him at their current spot.

In that sense the comparison does make sense but i was referring to Graham being stronger and faster then Hughes at this stage of their careers and i personally think that Graham is potentially better at this stage of his career then Woodley was. Incidentally where do you see Stevie Baggs (somebody you like if my memory serves me correctly) line-up if he succeeds at camp and gets into the team at some point during the season? He is somebody im hoping will be a pleasant surprise so im hoping you can enlighten us a bit about what he's like as ive not seen anything from him apart from the bits of youtube footage.

I'm really starting t cool on the idea of taking an OLB at all, I think. Sando just did a "by the numbers" type breakdown and it seems we have ELEVEN Lbs on the squad (the average for 3-4 teams) is something like 10...and we're almost certain to add another ILB, I'm just not sure we're best served adding a high pick at OLB.

Both Davis and Brown have promise. Hopefully Baggs does, too. I'm not sure I want another guy with "promise" at the position when we don't even have that at WILB.

Baggs won't line up anywhere if we draft another OLB. I don't mean to sound off on you, it just seems as though many on this board have no understanding of the fact that there are roster limits in the NFL. Those who are predicting that we take multiple OLBs just have no clue as to what they're talking about. Furthermore, if we don't take one in the first 2 rounds, we won't take one at all. Quite honestly, if we can't have Hughes or Graham, or if McClain or Weatherspoon are available, I think and hope we will ignore anyone else at the position.

Not when there are needs at WILB and NT like there are MD. I get what you are saying in that Stevie Baggs wouldn't cause them to pass on a guy they really love at OLB, but the only guys they draft in the 1st round are going to be ILB or NT IMHO because of the dramatic need to insert 1st round talent into those positions.

I actually am on the DJ bandwagon and think they will draft Kindle and move him inside because of his diverse skillset.

Remember there are some on this board who wanted to make Dansby a OLB year after year. Kindle has a similar skill set IMO.

I fully understand what you mean but if you read any of my previous posts i actually explained how the decisions would be relevant to roster space also. The decision to draft either Graham or Hughes is obviously dependent on the ILB's or NT's we want not being there at #26 and following the BPA formula Hughes/Graham being the BPA there. In regard to Baggs what i actually said was if he can succeed at training camp i.e. beat out the competition he has for the roster spot, would he be lining up on the opposite Porter or would he have to compete to be Porter's long term replacement. The whole point of Baggs being brought in was to provide competition for the OLB's we already have so he at least will get a chance at camp to prove himself. I dont think anybody is suggesting we take multiple OLB's, people are just wondering who would be the better OLB to take if they are BPA at 26 which is a fair argument.

I do agree with you that we have to address our needs if possible but you can never rule out a BPA pick being taken at 26 if the team determines that is where the best value can be attained. In the end i hope this discussion proves to be academic and McClain or Weatherspoon are or we trade down to fulfill our needs better.

I got to agree. Unless one that they are just absolutley fall in love with in the 1st or they pick one in the 7th they think they can stash on the PS, I just dont see it. They could keep 5 OLB's on the roster but its pushing it, especially since Porter, Haggans, Brown, and Davis are all locks to make the roster, minus injury of course.

I wasn't saying that at all. I was saying that unless there is an OLB that we absolutely LOVE siiting there at 26 and McClain and Weatherspoon are gone, I do not think we'll go OLB. The need there isn't half as bad as many of the know-nothings on this board and in the media paint it to be. I feel pretty confident in saying that our first round pick will be McClain, Weatherspoon, Lee, Wilson, Haden or McCourty. I think Stevie Baggs, Cody Brown, Mark Washington and Will Davis will absolutely keep the team from drafting any OLB who we don't think we seriously contend for a starting spot from Day 1.

I actually am on the DJ bandwagon and think they will draft Kindle and move him inside because of his diverse skillset.

No chance. I will bet you anything you like that there is a zero chance of this happening.

No he doesn't and no they wont. I don't mean to be rude, but sometimes you have to consider the source. Look who was for and who was opposed to moving Dansby. I'll take joeschmoe, k9, Bill Parcells and Ken Whisenhunt's opinions over that of Mitch and DJ any day of the week.

Levi and DRC were pretty easy picks to call. Where did they call the Beanie pick?

I seriously hope that Mark Washington has no bearing on anything the Cards do in this draft. Guy's an undrafted scrub. If there's an OLB prospect anywhere in the draft, don't let Mark Washington talk you out of taking him.

Ali Highsmith and Reggie Walker certainly aren't discouraging me from taking Brandon Spikes or another mid-round SILB.

I kind of like Kindle. Brian Orakpo was a good LB for Washington last year.

Really,?? It seems 2/3's of all the mocks I see either from folks here or in the media have us taking multiple OLBs.

The media maybe but there havent been many here and the only folks saying we should take OLB largely are saying we should take the likes of Hughes, Kindle or Graham as OLB when players at our positions of needs have been taken at #26.

1. Baggs rushed from the strongside in the CFL

2. He is practice squad eligible.

I'm with ya bud but here is my point. If Weatherspoon or McClain isn't there, I see them going best available NT, or a tackle that drops, or even corner. Or then a trade down if nothing else. I just feel like the team has positioned themselves so they could leave OLB off the draft board this year all together.

I am not going to pretend to know very much about the nuances of what makes a great WILB but Kindle reminds me alot of Dansby in college. Thats speaking purely from just watching games of them both so you maybe right.

And my point about Dansby being a rushing OLB is that he has the speed and skills to do it, but his strengths made him a much better WILB. I think although it doesn't appear that way, Kindle could too. In fact isn't that what he played while Orapko was playing the predator position in '09?

But I don't pretend to be Joeschmoe, K9, or Wiz on that kind of stuff. I am just throwing it out there.

What Cardsfanmd doesn't seem to know is that Kindle played a lot of OLB at Texas as well as DE, he was a finalist for both the Butkus and Hendricks awards last year and played lb exclusively his first two seasons at Texas.

I agreed with K9 after he explained that most college DEs would have trouble making the transition to ILB because they wouldn't have the experience of making the different reads. That doesn't apply to Kindle.

I was never in favor of moving Dansby to the outside in a 3-4 defense. I did say that I thought some teams might be interested in signing Dansby to move him to OLB, in a 4-3.

Wolfley just got smarter in my book. We NEED Jery Hughes, guy will be the pass rusher we've been looking for since Rice left. B-Train had a great run but now we need a young buck to take the torch.

What you say is true. But they'll take Washington or Lee too, if they have that oportunity and none of the aformentioned players fall our way. Spikes as the heir to G. Hayes is also possible if there no matter who we pick ahead of him.

That would be two upgrades at the position and some cuts would mtl be made.
