Philadelphia, PA, Sep 16, 2003 (The Sports Network via COMTEX) -- The
Philadelphia Eagles signed defensive tackle Frank Ferrara on Tuesday, one day
after learning that Paul Grasmanis is out for the season.
Ferrara spent the last two seasons with the Giants after they signed him as
rookie free agent in 1999. He was cut last month. Ferrara has tallied 32
tackles, 3 1/2 sacks and two forced fumbles in 25 games.
The 27-year-old has spent time doing stunt work for the HBO hit series "The
Sopranos."
"It's good to have a veteran player like Frank join us," said head coach Andy
Reid. "He'll get a chance to meet with the coaches over the bye week and learn
the defense. He'll also get an opportunity to practice with us the next couple
of days to get ready to play at Buffalo. He's a very aggressive player with a
high motor. We've had a chance to watch him up close the last couple of years."
Defensive tackle Grasmanis will have surgery Wednesday after he suffered a torn
left Achilles' tendon in Sunday's 31-10 loss to the New England Patriots. The
team has placed him on injured reserve.
Grasmanis was injured while chasing down Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in the
fourth quarter. He was then taken to the locker room on a stretcher.
The eight-year pro out of Notre Dame is one of many injured Eagles this season.
Philadelphia is already without All-Pro safety Brian Dawkins, Pro Bowl
cornerback Bobby Taylor and defensive ends Brandon Whiting, Derrick Burgess,
Jamaal Green and Jerome McDougle.
