The Tennessee Titans have scheduled an in-person interview with San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh for Jan. 19, a source confirmed to The Tennessean, adding Saleh to the list of candidates the Titans will host in the coming days along with Green Bay defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley and Kansas City offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.
Saleh was initially scheduled to interview with the Titans virtually on Jan. 18, the day after San Francisco's season ended. Saleh's in-person interview in Nashville will function as his first interview with the Titans, not a follow-up to the interview that had been scheduled virtually.
The former head coach of the New York Jets, Saleh went 20-36 across three seasons and a few games of a fourth. Since being fired by the Jets, Saleh returned to San Francisco where he previously worked as defensive coordinator before taking the Jets job.
Saleh’s three-plus seasons in New York were tumultuous. The highs, especially on defense, were impressive. The Jets posted top-three defenses in 2022 and 2023 behind Pro Bowl and All-Pro seasons from players like cornerback Sauce Gardner, Quinnen Williams, Quincy Williams, C.J. Mosley and Jermaine Johnson.
But the lows on offense wasted those performances. The Jets never found a reliable option at quarterback during the Saleh era, failing to develop first-round pick Zach Wilson behind center and whiffing on the big-money splash to acquire four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers was injured in Week 1 of the 2023 season, and stumbled out to a 2-3 start in 2024, leading to Saleh’s firing.
As The Tennessean reported on Jan. 17, the Titans' initial plan for in-person interviews involved speaking with Nagy, Hafley and former Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski. Stefanski has since been hired and announced as the next head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.
