It's no secret that star guard Jaylen Brown might not have been thrilled by the fact that the Boston Celtics tried to trade him last week for superstar center Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, whatever bad blood that generated reportedly never culminated in an official trade request from Brown.
Nonetheless, the five-time All-Star was dealt in a shocking move to the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday afternoon. The C's exchanged Brown for Sixers wing Paul George, two second-round picks, and two first-round picks. Those first-rounders are comprised of an unprotected 2031 selection belonging to the Sixers and a 2028 selection that will stem from whatever draft position is preferable between the Sixers and Los Angeles Clippers. In the wake of this shocking swap between Atlantic Division rivals, ESPN insider Shams Charania reiterated that Brown didn't specifically ask to leave Beantown.
"My understanding is that Jaylen Brown, throughout all of this, never requested a trade," Charania said on SportsCenter. "He never asked out of Boston. This is all the Celtics. We'll learn more."
On the local reporting front, Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe confirmed what Charania reported with his own sources. That leaves Celtics fans reeling and most of the NBA world scratching its head at what just happened.
Brown being upset with the C's wouldn't be a shocking revelation. He's been thrown around in trade rumors for years and the 2024 NBA Finals MVP might've had enough. Yet, all signs are suggesting that he didn't give up on the Celtics. They gave up on him.
When this trade becomes official, Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens will have to elaborate on why he and the rest of Boston's head decision makers opted to ship out a franchise cornerstone for a few picks and a player arguably past his prime.
Perhaps Stevens will explain that Boston's relationship with Brown was irreparable. Maybe he'll explain that there was financial motivation behind the stunning blockbuster. Regardless of his answer, he'll have to build a contender again this offseason to earn back the trust of fans — or risk losing it forever.

Jaylen Brown said he'd go to war for Boston.
He did that, secured a title, and likely put his name in the rafters. For him to be sent to Philadelphia is something probably no Celtics fans wanted, but it was a fruitful tenure overall.
