The NBA offseason is always fraught with trade scenarios and improbable swaps, but in the case of the Boston Celtics, these proposed offers could be more than just hypothetical.
Right now, the Celtics are engaged in conversations surrounding star guard Jaylen Brown and his future with the Green Team. It's no secret that Boston attempted to deal him for Giannis Antetokounmpo last week and, according to ESPN insider Shams Charania, the longest-tenured Celtic is still being named in trade talks. And while some suitors have yet to be identified, Charania said that the Portland Trail Blazers are intrigued by the five-time All-Star.
"Portland has been a team that has interest in Jaylen Brown," Charania shared on the "Get Up" show on ESPN. "They had interest in LaMelo Ball. They had interest in Giannis Antetokounmpo. They are a team that has a ton of draft capital. They've got a ton of young talent on this team. Could they make an offer?"
If the Blazers did commit to Brown, they may send a plethora of picks to sway the Celtics. Draft capital is reportedly of interest to the C's, so that could give the Blazers an advantage over some of the other front offices eyeing Brown.
"Jaylen Brown has three years left on his deal," Charania stated. "If you're the Portland Trail Blazers and you have the assets and the capability to go get a Jaylen Brown, there's not that worry that, 'Hey, he might not extend long-term.' He's already in long-term."
On Sunday, July 26, Brown will be eligible for a two-year, $142 million contract extension. Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens wouldn't discuss his willingness to grant that money to Brown, but it seems to be looming over the entire trade situation.
What happens next in this ongoing saga is anyone's guess, yet it's worth noting that the Blazers have done business with the Celtics before. They traded guard Jrue Holiday to Beantown in 2023 and the NBA vet helped the C's capture a title in 2024. In 2025, the Celtics sent Holiday back to the Blazers where he contributed to Portland's first winning season since 2021.
Moreover, Holiday and Brown are close and collaborate off the court with their shared Boston Creator Accelerator initiative, which invests in underrepresented entrepreneurs in the greater Boston area.
Simply put, there are ties between the Celtics and Blazers that already exist within their rosters and front offices. Perhaps that — coupled with Portland's draft stock — is enough to spark a trade. Or, maybe Brown and the Celtics shock the NBA world and reunite for another season.
