Report: Patriots Sending This One Pick To Eagles For A.J. Brown originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles can agree to a trade involving A.J. Brown on Monday after 4 p.m. EST after months of speculation.
It is believed the Eagles will send Brown to New England sometime in the next 24 to 48 hours. The trade compensation is still a big question mark, but Eagles insider for the Inquirer, Jeff McLane, reported that the Patriots are sending a first-round pick "straight up" for Brown.
"If the return for A.J. Brown is straight up a 2028 first round draft pick — and from what I understand, that is the case — then it would come two draft cycles after the parameters of a deal between the Eagles and Patriots were likely set," wrote McLane on X on Monday.
Nothing is official yet, but reports have been surfacing for months. McLane has heard that the return for Brown will be one singular pick, albeit a valuable one. However, he noted that it is a step down from the Eagles' original asking price.
"That’s quite a drop in compensation if the initial asking price, as I had heard it, was a first and a second rounder." McLane wrote on X on Monday. "Some of that seemed posturing. But the Rams were really the only other serious suitor. Brown was coming off a down season, has medical concerns with his knees, and requires some maintenance off the field. He’s also still highly regarded around the league and has many who vouch for his character and leadership."
So why are the Eagles accepting less than they initially wanted for Brown? Well, not only have they lost some leverage after the draft and free agency, but the cap savings they are getting by waiting lessen the need for a huge return. By waiting until after June 1, the Eagles can spread Brown's cap hit over the next two seasons, as opposed to eating it all this year.
If they had traded him earlier in the offseason, they would be responsible for the full cap hit, which is why they wanted more than just a first-round pick.
