The Detroit Red Wings may be facing the biggest offseason storyline in franchise history.

According to veteran NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, multiple sources have indicated that Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has recently requested a trade from Detroit, sending shockwaves through Hockeytown and raising serious questions about the future direction of the organization.

Neither Larkin, his agent Pat Brisson, nor Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman commented on the report, leaving plenty of uncertainty surrounding the situation. But if the report proves accurate, it would mark a stunning development involving the face of the franchise and one of the NHL’s premier two-way centers.

A Franchise-Altering Development

Larkin has been the heart and soul of the Red Wings for years. A Michigan native, team captain, and fan favorite, he has represented the organization through the highs and lows of a lengthy rebuilding process.

Now, after Detroit missed the playoffs for the 10th consecutive season in 2025-26, frustration appears to be reaching a boiling point.

The Red Wings entered the season with playoff expectations and spent much of the year battling for a postseason spot. But another late-season collapse left the team on the outside looking in once again.

For a player who turns 38? Wait, no. For a player firmly in the prime of his career, the continued inability to break through may have become too much to ignore.

Why Would Larkin Want Out?

While no official explanation has been provided, Friedman reported that two factors appear to be driving the situation.

The first is obvious: Detroit’s inability to qualify for the playoffs despite years of rebuilding and roster turnover.

The second is more intriguing.

According to Friedman, there appears to be a somewhat frosty relationship between Larkin and Red Wings executive vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman.

Exactly what has caused that tension remains unclear, but the report suggests it could be playing a role in Larkin’s desire for a change of scenery.

Larkin Holds the Cards

Any potential trade would be complicated by the fact that Larkin possesses a full no-trade clause through next season.

That means he controls where he goes.

It also means the Red Wings are not operating from a position where they can simply send their captain to the highest bidder.

Still, there would be no shortage of interest.

Elite centers are among the most valuable assets in hockey, and Larkin’s performances on the international stage, including the 4 Nations Face-Off and the Olympics, only reinforced his value around the league.

Any team looking for a top-line center would undoubtedly make a call.

What Happens Next?

One thing that seems certain is that Steve Yzerman will not rush into anything.

Throughout his tenure as Detroit’s general manager, Yzerman has consistently shown patience and discipline, refusing to make moves simply because of outside pressure.

If Larkin has indeed requested a trade, the Red Wings will likely take their time evaluating options and determining what is best for the organization.

With the NHL Draft approaching and free agency not far behind, this story is only beginning.

For now, Red Wings fans are left with a question that would have seemed unthinkable just a few months ago:

Could Dylan Larkin’s time in Detroit really be coming to an end?
