The trade speculation surrounding Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin continues to evolve.

According to MLive’s Ansar Khan, Larkin has expanded the list of teams he would waive his full no-trade clause to join. The latest addition is the Dallas Stars, who now join the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, and Vegas Golden Knights as potential destinations.

Even with another team added to the list, Khan noted that a deal doesn’t appear to be any closer.

Dallas Joins Larkin’s Preferred Destinations

Reports connecting Larkin to Dallas first surfaced in late June, and Khan’s latest report adds more context to the situation.

The Stars are now reportedly among the four teams Larkin would approve in a trade. While that gives Steve Yzerman one additional trade partner to work with, it also highlights how limited Detroit’s options remain.

Because Larkin owns a full no-trade clause, he controls where he can be dealt, significantly limiting the Red Wings’ leverage in any negotiations.

Red Wings Set a High Asking Price

According to Khan, Detroit and Dallas have discussed the framework of a potential trade.

The Red Wings reportedly asked for young star Wyatt Johnston in return.

It was an ambitious request.

Johnston, who is just 23 years old, is coming off a breakout season in which he scored 45 goals and totaled 86 points. He has also played every game over his first four NHL seasons, making him one of the NHL’s premier young centers and a foundational piece of the Stars’ future.

Unsurprisingly, the request went nowhere.

Why a Trade Remains Difficult

Even though Larkin has reportedly expanded his list of acceptable destinations, completing a trade remains complicated.

Detroit is under no pressure to move its captain, who remains under contract through the 2030-31 season with an annual cap hit of $8.7 million.

If Yzerman decides to trade the face of the franchise, the return would need to accelerate Detroit’s rebuild or playoff aspirations. That likely means acquiring young NHL talent rather than a package centered around draft picks.

Finding a team willing to meet that asking price, while also appearing on Larkin’s short list of approved destinations, is a difficult combination.

What Happens Next?

For now, the trade rumors continue without much indication that a deal is imminent.

Adding Dallas to his list gives Larkin one more potential landing spot, but unless another club is willing to meet Detroit’s lofty demands, the Red Wings captain could remain right where he is.

As the offseason continues, all eyes will remain on Steve Yzerman to see whether the situation changes or if Detroit ultimately keeps its longtime captain in Hockeytown.
