The Boston Bruins bench will look a little different next year.
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported that the Bruins have parted ways with assistant coach Jay Leach on Thursday’s episode of the “DFO Rundown Insider Edition.” Pagnotta added that Leach’s contract is up at the end of the season, and the team will not be renewing it.
“Not earth-shattering stuff out of Boston for the time being, but impactful certainly as it affects their bench,” Pagnotta said. “This was a team that was on the rise with Marco Sturm coming in. They got back into the postseason.”
“Significant improvement from the season prior. They want to continue to grow off that on and off the ice, so they’ve made one change already.”
Pagnotta added that the search for an assistant coach is currently underway.
Leach has coached the defense corps for the last two seasons, working under Jim Montgomery, Joe Sacco, and Marco Sturm. During his tenure, the Bruins have allowed 2.72 expected goals against per 60 (at 5-on-5), the sixth-most in the league.
Leach also coached the Providence Bruins from 2017-21. They went 136-77-26 under his leadership and qualified for the playoffs twice (playoffs were canceled in 2020 and 2021). He left the P-Bruins for an assistant coaching job with Dave Hakstol and the expansion Seattle Kraken, where he stayed for three seasons before returning to the Bruins organization in 2024.
He was a finalist for the Bruins’ head coaching job in 2025.
In his playing days, Leach played two games for the Boston Bruins and played in four seasons (209 games) with the Providence Bruins.
Leach has been in the running for head coaching gigs for a few years now, and Pagnotta also reported that Leach is a candidate for the Toronto Maple Leafs’ head coaching job.
