Report: Ryan Mougenel Departing Bruins Organization

The Providence Bruinswill need a new head coach for the 2026-27 season.

According to Frank Seravalli, Ryan Mougenel is headed to Vancouver. He will join head coach Manny Malhotra on the new-look Canucks’ bench.

Mougenel spent the previous seven seasons running the Providence Bruins’ bench, with the last five as the head coach. Over his tenure, he coached the P-Bruins to a 217-103-26-14 record, two Atlantic Division titles, and led them to five playoff appearances.

He spent the first two seasons as an assistant under Jay Leach, who recently left the organization to become the head coach of the Hartford Wolf Pack (NYR).

This past season, the P-Bruins finished with the AHL’s best record, going 54-16-2-0 and winning the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy. Mougenel also added the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Trophy to his résumé, which is given annually to the most outstanding AHL coach.

However, after a first-round bye, the Bruins were bounced in a four-game series (best-of-five) to the Springfield Thunderbirds (STL).

The playoff struggles were not limited to just this season. In Mougenel’s five-year tenure, the P-Bruins never made it beyond the Division Semifinals. Further, they only won one playoff series, a best-of-three first-round series against Springfield in 2025.

There were also concerns about player development throughout Mougenel’s time in Providence. Aside from Mason Lohrei’s short stint and Justin Brazeau’s emergence into the NHL, there were no Providence Bruins to claim full-time roster spots with the Bruins in the five years Mougenel coached.

Throughout their history, the Providence Bruins have not shied away from promoting an assistant coach. Mougenel, Leach, Kevin Dean, Bruce Cassidy, Rob Murray, Scott Gordon, and Bill Armstrong (yes, the Utah GM) were all assistant coaches in Providence before becoming the head coach.

Ryan Bourque and Trent Whitfield are currently assistant coaches in Providence.

Neither Boston nor Vancouver has confirmed the hire.
