Red Sox Should Pursue Potential Trade For 24-Year-Old Cubs Infielder originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
When the Boston Red Sox traded the Milwaukee Brewers for second-year third baseman Caleb Durbin, it appeared that the team had figured out its plans for the hot corner for the foreseeable future.
As Durbin's sophomore slump continues, the Red Sox have begun utilizing Nick Sogard at third base against favorable matchups in an attempt to spark some offense. Though the trade deadline is a ways away, the Red Sox are already talking trades as the team sits only a couple of games out of the playoffs.
One player the Red Sox should target is the Chicago Cubs' infielder Matt Shaw. Boston reportedly had an ongoing dialogue with Chicago during the offseason about potential moves, but nothing ever came of it.
Shaw had a solid rookie campaign, slashing .226/.295/.394 with 13 home runs and 44 runs batted in, but is struggling to find consistent playing time in his sophomore season behind Alex Bregman at third base and Nico Hoerner at second base.
"The Chicago Cubs, who are seeking a front-line starter at the trade deadline, may have no choice but to move infielder Matt Shaw, who’s blocked at third base by Alex Bregman and second base by Nico Hoerner," USA Today's Bob Nightengale wrote on Sunday. "He has been in the starting lineup just 22 times this season."
There's an urgency for Boston to improve its roster, and the team has the assets to get a deal done. Shaw is a talented and versatile player who could give the Red Sox a little more power from the right side in their lineup.
The Cubs announced on Friday that Shaw was headed to the 10-day injury list with mid-back tightness, but there is plenty of time before the August 3 trade deadline if the Red Sox are interested in acquiring the 24-year-old and want to wait for his return.
