Red Sox linked to Cubs former top infield prospect as fascinating trade target originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
While the Boston Red Sox are expected to act as trade deadline sellers this season, it's still possible for the Red Sox to add players who could help in 2027 or even 2026 at the deadline.
A good way to do so would be adding a player or two who could factor into the MLB roster right away in exchange for a veteran player. There are plenty of players who fit the bill, one of whom comes from the Chicago Cubs.
Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN linked the Red Sox to Cubs infielder Matt Shaw, who they project has a 40% chance of being traded, as a potential trade fit. This would be very intriguing, and it could also be a huge help for the Red Sox.
Red Sox linked to Cubs' Matt Shaw in fascinating trade
"Matt Shaw, IF, Chicago Cubs. Chance of being traded: 40%," Passan and McDaniel write. "Best fits: Red Sox, Yankees, Rays, Royals, Brewers, Blue Jays, Giants."
With the Cubs trying to build a postseason contender, they would only be trading Shaw if they could get back a player or two to help their Major League roster this season.
The Red Sox, likely sellers this season by the August 3 trade deadline, make a ton of sense as a possible landing spot for Shaw.
The 24-year-old infielder is a former Cubs top prospect, and would be a premier trade chip for the Red Sox to acquire this season.

With the Cubs eyeing help across the roster, players like Jarren Duran, Sonny Gray, and Aroldis Chapman would be appealing for the Cubs in a trade.
Now, Shaw would likely cost more than just one of those players, but if the Red Sox could pair two of those players in a deal for Shaw, they could land a promising young infielder who's under club control through 2031.
Shaw is the kind of player the Red Sox should try to get this season by parting with a few Major Leaguers in a deal with the Cubs. Passan and McDaniel linking the Red Sox to Shaw makes a ton of sense, and could be a win-win for both teams.
