Garrett Whitlock couldn't bypass the injury list after all.
The Boston Red Sox relief pitcher hoped to avoid a trip to the injured list after hyperextending his left knee on Sunday. Whitlock slipped while throwing warm-up pitches and wasn't available in Boston's ensuing two games.
The Red Sox announced unfortunate news before Thursday's game against the Atlanta Braves, placing Whitlock on the 15-day IL.
Boston recalled Tyler Samaniego from Triple-A Worcester to fill Whitlock's spot on the roster.
Whitlock has followed a breakthrough 2025 season with another strong one as Boston's setup man to closer Aroldis Chapman. The right-hander posted a 3.20 ERA in 20 appearances, tallying 25 strikeouts and six walks in 19 2/3 innings.
Whitlock had allowed just one hit over five straight scoreless outings before yielding two hits and a run on Sunday. The 29-year-old received a pain-killing injection on Tuesday and remained focused on avoiding an extended absence.
"Luckily, no structural damage, like no ligament or anything like that. So I’m just kind of trying to get everything out of it now," Whitlock said earlier this week, per MLB.com's Ian Browne. "…We're trying to do everything we can (to avoid an IL stint)."
Boston placed Whitlock on the IL retroactive to May 25. Justin Slaten, who returned from a month-long absence on May 10, could be Boston's most likely eighth-inning option despite relinquishing four runs in his last outing.
Meanwhile, Samaniego returns to Boston's bullpen after getting optioned to Worcester on Sunday. The left-hander has allowed just two earned runs in 18 big league appearances this season.
